How Cronus Zen Memory Slots Work
One of the most useful Cronus Zen features is its built-in memory slot system.
Memory slots allow you to save scripts and supported profiles directly to the Cronus Zen and switch between them without having to load the file from your computer every time.
If you're new to Cronus Zen, here's exactly how the system works.
How Many Memory Slots Does Cronus Zen Have?
Cronus Zen has 8 programmable memory slots.
Each slot has 32KB of memory and can contain supported content such as:
- GPC scripts
- GamePacks
- Remapper profiles
Think of each memory slot as a separate position on your Zen where you can store a script or configuration.
For example:
Slot 1: Script A
Slot 2: Script B
Slot 3: Script C
Slot 4: Another profile
Slots 5–8: Available for additional scripts or configurations
You don't have to fill every slot.
Where Are Memory Slots Managed?
Memory slots are primarily managed through the Programmer panel in Zen Studio.
When your Cronus Zen is connected, open Zen Studio and select the Programmer tab.
You'll see the available memory slots along with areas containing scripts, local GPC files and other compatible content.
This is where you decide what gets stored on the device.
How to Add a GPC Script to a Memory Slot
Adding a script is straightforward.
Step 1: Open Your Script
Open your .gpc file in the Compiler inside Zen Studio.
Once the script is open, it can appear in the Programmer panel.
Step 2: Open Programmer
Select the Programmer tab.
You'll see the eight available memory slots.
Step 3: Drag the Script Into a Slot
Drag your GPC script into the memory slot you want to use.
For example, you could place it into Slot 1.
Step 4: Program the Device
This step is important.
Placing the script into the slot in Zen Studio doesn't necessarily mean the change has already been written to your Zen.
Click Program Device.
Zen Studio will then write the configured memory slots to your Cronus Zen.
Once programming is complete, the script is stored on the device.
For a complete walkthrough, see our How to Install GPC Scripts on Cronus Zen guide.
How Do You Switch Between Memory Slots?
Once multiple scripts have been programmed to your Zen, you can switch between them without opening Zen Studio.
The easiest method is the P1 button beside the Cronus Zen OLED display.
Pressing P1 cycles through your programmed memory slots.
The OLED screen helps show which slot or script is currently active.
For example:
Slot 1 → Slot 2 → Slot 3 → Slot 4
Continue pressing the button to cycle through your available slots.
What Is Slot 0?
You may also see Slot 0 mentioned in Zen Studio or Device Monitor.
Slot 0 means that no programmed memory slot is currently loaded.
In other words, your Zen is connected, but none of the scripts stored in Slots 1–8 are currently active.
This can be useful when you want to temporarily unload the active memory-slot script without deleting it from the device.
Can You Switch Memory Slots With Your Controller?
Yes.
Zen Studio includes a Remote Slot Change feature that allows supported controllers to switch memory slots without requiring you to physically press the P1 button on the Zen.
The shortcut depends on the controller being used.
Examples documented by Cronus include:
- PS4 / PS5 controller: PS + SHARE
- Xbox One / Series controller: Xbox + VIEW
- Nintendo Switch controller: HOME + MINUS
Zen Studio lets you configure the available remote slot-change shortcuts from the Device panel.
This can be particularly convenient if your Cronus Zen isn't within easy reach while playing.
Can Different Slots Store Different Settings?
Yes.
Memory slots are independent from each other.
Cronus Zen also provides slot-specific persistent variables that scripts can use to remember saved settings.
Each memory slot has its own private persistent-variable storage.
That means settings stored by a script in Slot 1 don't automatically overwrite the private settings being used by a script in Slot 2.
This is useful for scripts that have custom OLED menus or configurable values that are saved between sessions.
How to Delete a Memory Slot
If you no longer need a script:
- Connect your Cronus Zen to Zen Studio.
- Open Programmer.
- Find the memory slot you want to clear.
- Drag the slot to the trash/delete area.
- Click Program Device.
The change must be programmed back to the Zen before the slot is actually cleared from the device.
You can then reuse the empty slot for another script.
Can You Erase All Memory Slots at Once?
Yes.
Zen Studio also provides an Erase Memory Slots option through its Device settings.
This clears all programmed memory slots without performing a complete factory reset.
This is different from a factory reset.
A factory reset restores device settings to their defaults and also erases the memory slots, while Erase Memory Slots is specifically for clearing the stored slots.
If you need to completely reset your device, follow our How to Factory Reset Your Cronus Zen guide.
What Does Reload Memory Slots Do?
The Programmer panel also includes a Reload Memory Slots option.
This synchronizes the memory-slot information shown in Zen Studio with what's currently stored on the connected device.
It's especially useful if changes have been made elsewhere and Zen Studio's displayed slot configuration needs refreshing.
Why Isn't My Script Showing on My Cronus Zen?
If you dragged a script into a slot but it isn't appearing on the Zen, one common reason is forgetting to click Program Device.
Remember:
Adding a script to a slot → chooses the configuration
Program Device → actually writes it to your Cronus Zen
If your Zen still isn't working correctly, make sure Zen Studio detects it properly.
See our Zen Studio Not Detecting Cronus Zen troubleshooting guide.
Does Updating Firmware Delete Your Memory Slots?
It's always a good idea to keep copies of your .gpc files on your computer before firmware updates, resets or major configuration changes.
Your local script files are much easier to restore if you ever need to reprogram your memory slots.
For firmware instructions, see our Cronus Zen Firmware Update Guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many scripts can you put on a Cronus Zen?
Cronus Zen has eight programmable memory slots. How you use them depends on the type and size of the supported content you're programming.
Do I need my computer to switch scripts?
No. Once your scripts have been programmed to the Zen, you can cycle between memory slots using the device's P1 button or a configured remote controller shortcut.
Does switching slots delete the previous script?
No. Switching to another slot simply changes which programmed slot is active. The other scripts remain stored in their slots.
Why does my Zen say Slot 0?
Slot 0 means there is currently no programmed memory slot loaded.
Can I replace a script in a slot?
Yes. Open the Programmer panel, replace or clear the existing slot, add the new script and click Program Device.
Can I leave memory slots empty?
Yes. You don't need to use all eight slots.
