Cronus Zen USB Ports Explained: A1, A2, A3, PROG & CONSOLE/PC

Not sure which USB port to use on your Cronus Zen? This guide explains what each port is for, the most common controller and console connection layouts, and what to check when Zen Studio or your controller is not detecting correctly.

Important: A1, A2 and A3 can have different jobs depending on your console, controller and accessory setup. Use the connection layout that matches what you are trying to do rather than assuming every setup uses the same input port.

CONSOLE/PC USB

This is the Zen's main output connection. It is normally connected from the Cronus Zen to the console or PC you are playing on.

  • Use it for the connection from Zen to the game system.
  • Do not confuse it with the PROG port when opening Zen Studio.
  • For PC gameplay, some official setups require the PROG cable to be disconnected before launching a game.

PROG USB

The PROG connection is used to communicate with Zen Studio on a Windows PC for device configuration, script programming and related setup tasks.

  • Use PROG when Zen Studio needs to communicate with the Zen.
  • If Zen Studio cannot find the device, confirm the cable is in PROG and supports data.
  • A charge-only USB cable can power a device but still fail to provide a data connection.

A1 USB

A1 is commonly used for a primary wired controller, an authentication controller, or a setup-specific accessory.

  • Common default wired-controller connection.
  • Frequently used for an authentication controller in crossover configurations.
  • Zen LINK setups can use A1 for the Zen LINK module.

A2 is a secondary input port. It is used by certain multi-device setups and can also be used temporarily during some wireless-adapter pairing procedures.

  • Useful when a setup needs more than one input device.
  • May be used temporarily while pairing a controller to a wireless adapter.
  • Do not assume A2 is the default controller port for every console.

A3 USB

A3 is widely used for crossover controllers, wireless adapters and controller/accessory inputs in setup-specific configurations.

  • Common active-controller port in crossover layouts.
  • Common port for compatible wireless adapters.
  • Zen LINK setups use A3 for the controller while the LINK module is in A1.

Which Cronus Zen USB port should you use?

The correct answer depends on what you are connecting. These are the most useful layouts to understand.

Standard wired controller setup

Console / PC↔CONSOLE/PC+A1↔Controller

For a typical same-controller/same-console USB setup, connect Zen to the game system using CONSOLE/PC, then connect the wired controller to A1.

Crossover controller setup

A1↔Matching / auth controller+A3↔Crossover controller

In supported crossover configurations, A1 can be used for the controller required for authentication while the controller you actively use is connected to A3.

Cronus Zen USB port problems and fixes

Zen Studio does not detect the Zen

  1. Confirm the PC cable is connected to PROG, not CONSOLE/PC.
  2. Try another known-good USB data cable.
  3. Try another USB port on the Windows PC.
  4. Close and reopen Zen Studio after reconnecting the Zen.

Controller powers on but does not respond

  1. Check that you are using the correct A1/A2/A3 port for your setup.
  2. Confirm Zen's output protocol is correct for the connected system.
  3. Reconnect the controller with a known-good data cable.
  4. Test the controller without a script loaded to separate connection problems from script configuration problems.

The Zen powers on but the console does not see it

  1. Verify the game system is connected to CONSOLE/PC.
  2. Reconnect the console-side USB cable firmly at both ends.
  3. Try another supported USB port on the console.
  4. Restart the connection after checking the output protocol in Zen Studio.

Connection becomes unreliable or disconnects

  1. Remove unnecessary USB extensions or hubs while troubleshooting.
  2. Use short, reliable data cables where possible.
  3. Make sure wireless controllers are sufficiently charged.
  4. Add accessories back one at a time after confirming the base setup works.
Cable check: A cable can provide power without carrying data. If the Zen or controller lights up but is not detected, testing with a known-good USB data cable is one of the fastest ways to rule out the cable.
